Driving Today NewsFeb 29, 2008 The Return of the El Camino?: In a bow to the long-ago-discontinued half car-half-pickup El Camino, GMC unveiled the Denali XT concept at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. With car-like unibody architecture and rear drive, the concept uses dual-mode hybrid technology to offer a 50-percent increase in combined fuel economy over comparable small pickup trucks when running on gasoline. With its unibody structure, the Denali XT is lighter than conventional body-on-frame trucks and is said to deliver great ride-and-handling characteristics. This design enhances fuel economy while allowing tuning for performance. But it’s a real truck as well with the ability to tow up to 3500 pounds, a cargo space-enhancing Midgate and height-adjustable suspension.
