New Lightweight Camping Trailer, the "Anti-RV"

Do you like the camping lifestyle but find giant recreational vehicles and big trailers over the top? Coleman has just introduced an alternative for you: its new ultralight concept trailer, the “Anti-RV.” Weighing approximately 700 pounds, the Switchback can easily be towed behind fuel-efficient compact cars and small crossover utility vehicles (CUVs), or less easily, by a team of oxen.

In the camping mode, the Switchback concept trailer features a backpacker-style tent, which deploys to create a spacious 12-foot-9-inch by 6-foot-6-inch living space with sleeping accommodations for four or more campers. Two 51-inch by 78-inch private sleeping areas feature meshed ceiling panels for sleeping under the stars and include rain protection with an easy-to-deploy rain fly. Between the wing-like sleeping compartments is a 52-inch by 80-inch common area that can easily become an impromptu dining area, pinochle room or additional sleeping space.

“Unlike other ultralightweight sport utility trailers, this layout is ideal for singles, couples, friends and families who think green and want to leave a small carbon footprint with their tow-vehicle choice and camping lifestyle,” said Dana Gehman, FTCA Product Development & Marketing Manager. She failed to mention brooding loners, but it would probably be good for them, too.

The versatile Switchback also functions as a capable utility trailer for closer-to-home activities such as landscaping or weekend building projects. With a front gear deck measuring 31 inches by 52 inches, and a versatile roof rack system, the Switchback can easily carry standard 4-foot by 8-foot plywood sheets and two-by-fours, shrubs or bags of mulch. The Switchback’s suggested retail price is expected to be approximately $4,000. The vehicle will be appearing at selected authorized Coleman camping trailer dealers soon.
