What Will the New Mustang Look Like?

It seems like the ‘60s all over again…except that gasoline prices are 10 times as high. Just like in the ‘60s, the Ford Mustang, the leader in the pony car segment, is now being besieged by rivals like the new Dodge Challenger and the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro. So to fight back, Ford decided to leak selected details about the 2010 version of the Mustang.

Among the things the company is willing to reveal is that the new Mustang will have a sportier, more aggressive front grille and fascia. Slimmer headlamps that integrate the turn indicators will be incorporated in a larger grille that, in Ford’s words, “expresses power and performance.” Large twin fog lamps on the GT model will further emphasize Mustang’s muscle-car DNA, which takes on a stealthy persona for the GT with dark headlamp bezels and grille surrounds. Also on the GT, the pony badge is finished in dark chrome for the first time. The pony itself will receive a makeover and is a more chiseled and defined interpretation of the American icon, galloping proudly on the front grille.

“We want people to unequivocally know this is a Mustang when they see it,” said Douglas Gaffka, chief designer, 2010 Mustang. “The stronger, more muscular front end of the 2010 Mustang does just that.”

Ford insists that brute strength can be beautiful as well, however. The company insists the sculpted, flowing lines convey style and grace as well as raw power. Mustang will continue to cling to its mantra of fast, fun and affordable, much like one of our old girlfriends.
