Simple Gas-Saving Tips

As oil prices continue to rise, the average fuel tank can cost over $60 to fill. The AAA and the Oil Price Information Service have recently noted that the national average price of a gallon of regular gas has hit record highs -- something we don’t have to tell you. And with no sign of relief ahead, drivers are looking for ways to cut down on fuel costs. Experts say there are ways to make a trip to the pump a little less painful. For instance, maintaining proper tire pressure can save up to two percent of your fuel economy. When air pressure becomes too low, the engine uses more fuel than necessary, so take a minute to make certain all your tires are at the proper pressure.

Speed can also be a factor in poorer fuel economy. The aerodynamic drag of a car at high speeds results in significantly more energy consumption than at lower speeds. Experts say every 5 mph over 60 is equal to paying an additional 20 cents a gallon. The EPA says that driving sensibly and obeying posted speed limits can improve your mileage anywhere from five to as much as 30 percent.  Most experts also agree that keeping your car properly maintained is one of the best things you can do. The typical “tune-up” is largely a thing of the past, but it is important to have a clean air filter, clean oil filter and clean oil. Adding all these small tips together could result in an extra tank of gas every other month.
